For years, Uber, Uber Eats and others have been violating Swiss laws and shamelessly exploiting workers. With very few exceptions, Swiss authorities have stood by and done nothing.
No wonder, then, that the food delivery service Just Eat is now following the same path: it intends to copy the Uber model and dismiss most of its couriers, only to have them continue working for the company as fake self-employed workers – on rock-bottom wages, without fixed working hours and without social security contributions.
Enough is enough! If employers do not pay their contributions, the social security system will gradually be undermined. Swiss authorities must now fulfil their legal duty and put a stop to the systematic use of undeclared labour at Uber, Uber Eats, Bolt and the like.
The cantons and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) must take action. They must now work in a coordinated and determined manner to put an end to the illegal exploitation of thousands of workers who are falsely declared as self-employed. The laws also apply to so-called «platforms».
