Unia, Switzerland’s inter-professional trade union
Unia and its members fight for the interests of all employees and workers. Unia is committed to reaching progressive collective labour agreements and struggles to achieve more socially just laws. It represents the interests of all employees right up to specialist level and offers its members advice, legal protection and other professional services. Unia operates the largest unemployment insurance fund in Switzerland.
With the amalgamation of the trade unions GBI, SMUV, VHTL, unia and actions, in 2005 Unia is now the largest trade union in Switzerland with over 200,000 members and almost 100 administrative offices. Unia has negotiated collective labour agreements that lay down the terms of employment for around one million people. The merger of the existing sector-specific bodies into the inter-professional trade union of Unia is the answer to the increasing mobility of employees. Unia has traditionally had a strong basis in the construction, industrial and commercial sectors. Unia is also the fastest growing trade union in the service sector.
Unia is founded on the core values of just and fair working conditions, social security, international solidarity and an economic system that is oriented toward the needs of the people.
